Sharp showed an unusual version of a folding smartphone

The company Sharp introduced an alternative version of a folding smartphone. If Huawei and Samsung  bend their first models horizontally, then the Japanese manufacturer decided to fold the device vertically. This allows the phone to be much smaller.

The prototype shown in the video is equipped with a 6.18-inch flexible organic electroluminescent (EL) display with a resolution of 3040×1440 pixels. When folded between the halves, no gap is formed. The manufacturer claims that the device is able to withstand 300,000 folding cycles, so that it has no problems with durability. The representative of Sharp believes that the demand for such a smartphone will be high, since it simultaneously offers a large screen and a compact size.

Note that Sharp already has a patent for a similar folding smartphone:

The company plans to launch a commercial release of smartphones in this form factor in a few years. Meanwhile, this year is expected to yield  Motorola Razr with a similar design.
